It's hard to believe that to date, there have been 767 caches placed on the island of Ireland. However only 622 are "active" caches. Caches that have been removed are called "archived" caches. These are caches that will not be put back in the same place again. This can happen for a number of reasons, change of terrain, cachers move out of the area etc. It's been amazing the growth of geocaching in Ireland. In the beginning, there was only a handful of caches. The first ever geocache in Ireland (and the first ever in Europe) was placed on Bray Head Co. Wicklow, on June 3rd 2000, by local Chris O'Byrne, a month after selective availability was turned off. It was 7 months later Ireland's second geocache was born, just off the summit of Carrigoona in Co. Wicklow by another local, Kyle O'Connell. Since then there has been a steady flow of caches in various locations, from the highest point in the country to the lowest. The table below shows the geocache milestones. The milestones were compiled from a database off all caches on the island of Ireland, then sorted by placed date to get the list.
